J132 Making Plain Negative Past of Verbs

This is really a matter of just taking the Plain Non-past (ない-form) of Verbs and changing it to the かった form as we would to any い-Adjective

So, Let's Review the ない-form of Verbs

1. Once again we see that る-verbs are easy: just add ない to the verb stem/base:

食べない

見ない

起きない

寝ない

いない

So we see how consistent and regular are る-verbs: 食べます、食べる、食べて、食べない.

Past form would be 食べなかった

What stays constant? The Base and Stem which are the same = the pre-ます form.

See a BLOG about Japanese verbs

2. う-verbs are a different story.

The stem (pre-ます) and Base are NOT the same. There will be a change along the consonant line to yield-->some kind of 「 あない」sound preceded by the relevant consonant.

a. M

読みますーーー>読むーー>読まない 読まなかった

飲みます

飲みますーーー>飲むーーー>飲まない 飲まな

[B] よびますーーー>よぶーーー>よばない

(invite, call);

あそびますーーー>あそぶーーー>あそばない

b. K

書きますーーー>書くーーー>書かない 書かなかった

行きますーーー>行くーーー>行かない

あるきますーーー>あるくーーー>あるかない;

聞きますーーー>聞くーーー>聞かない

[G] およぎますーーー>およぐーーー>およがない

いそぎますーーー>いそぐーーー>いそがない (hurry)

c. S

話しますーーー>話なすーーー>話なさない 話さなかった

かしますーーー>かすーーー>かさない (lend)

d. I (Vowel) = herepl neg a latent "W" surfaces to create a わない sound; does it come from う+あない = うあない so we might as wellpl neg say わない for ease and convenience?

会いますーーー>会うーーー>会わない 会わなかった

買いますーーー>買うーーー>買わない

うたいますーーー>うたうーーー>うたわない

e. T まちますーーー>まつーーー>またない

もちますーーー>もつーーー>もたない

(have, hold)

f. R

帰りますーーー>帰るーーー>帰らない 帰らなかった

作りますーーー>作るーーー>作らない (make);

分りますーーー>分かるーーー>分からない

g. N しにますーーー>しぬーーー>しなない (die)

So, unlike る-verbs, the Base changes:

読みます、読む、読んで、読まない

話します、話す、話して、話さない

Of coursepl neg, we have our IRREGULAR verbs, as well:

1.  しますーーー>するーー>しない kinda behaves like a る-verb

2. 来ますーーー>来るーー>来ない totally irregular

Practice: Plain ない form; Past with なかった
